Took Cyril out for a quick float and we boated a handful of 20’s in two riffles. And Cyril enjoyed watching me loose two others but did not think it was as funny when he lost one. Teaching a 9 year old to keep the line tight is pretty hilarious! And apparently he needs lessons on how to hold a trout (“Dad, it’s really heavy”). 😂

Sometimes you find water that is so beautiful that you just know there *has* to be fish in it, and when you discover that there *are*, you can’t help but return to it again 💦

Living in Northern California is amazing for many reasons, but perhaps my favorite is that while all of my Alaskan, Midwest, and Colorado / Montana friends are sitting around fireplaces tying flies, I get to go out and catch tons of trout and steelhead, ha ha! I’m not trying to rub it in or anything... full stop, yes I am. But I guess that just makes up for when you are posting all your epic pictures from your three month long “egg bite” and huge salmon fly hatches.
.
So while you are sitting there enjoying your nice warm fireplace and tying those size 18 midges, just remember that I’m currently catching 20+ inch fish on size 18 inch midges all winter long here in Nor Cal 😂

Seriously though... why you got to post all those epic pictures in the summer when it’s 115 degrees here?!?! It’s painful! 🤷🏽‍♂️

I'm really looking forward to the warmer weather because it seems easier to talk my kids into joining me on trips on the river. Plus, sometimes the trout are on suicide missions and go into what I call the #caddiscrunch and simply will bite anything that looks like a trichoptera.
.
Swinging soft hackles, drifting birds nests or bubble backs or poopahs, & throwing mercer's missing links or elk hairs can just be stupid good.
.
But more importantly, those times are fun for clients, friends, and most importantly, family.

Sometimes the stars align and for whatever reason, you catch monstrous trout on tiny flies.

Yesterday I took a bud to a special spot on a special river here in Northern California and the stars aligned and a lot of really big fish were caught, including this near 23+ inch beautiful 'bow.
.
Not every day is like that, but when days like that happen, you can't help but wonder what one did to deserve it... only to realize that it's all grace. Sometimes things just go right and the fish eats, the tippet holds, the hooks hold, and the fish makes it to the net.

Awhile back I had some cool clients on the Lower Sacramento River who could cast, knew bug life, and collectively had bout 100 years of fly fishing experience (their version of that was, “Luke, we’re really old”) 😂
.
Despite their skills and experience, the fishing was super slow. It’s common on social media for guides to make it look like every cast is yanking in 20inchers, but the fact of the matter is that there are slow days and sometimes fisheries aren’t as great as other days. Some guide many years ago invented a saying to convey that: “You should have been here yesterday.” But that’s fishing and when it’s great, it’s great; when it’s slow, it’s slow; and when it’s average, it’s average. 🤷🏽‍♂️
.
Anyway, back to these two dudes and our float. Though we caught a few trout here and there, nothing was big and we wanted some big ones. Yet near the end of the float, we hooked a fish and it was definitely heavy... and boy was it staying down deeeeeeeeeppppppp. It reminded me of how a lot of big dollies fight in Alaska. Or maybe a big brown trout. Maybe we’ve finally hooked a brown on the Sacramento River and I can be as cool as the Kennedy brothers?!?! Surely they have to have done that since they are legends 🙌🏼
.
Nope. It was just a big ‘ole sucker. Or as we affectionately refer to them here, a California Golden Bone.
.
No runs... just a few head shakes and this fish was stuck to the bottom. We finally managed to net the fish and sent her back into the deep waters of one of the best tailwater fisheries in the western United States, what my friend Steve Deveraux calls, “The Mighty Sac.” Mighty because she will give you gifts you can only dream about and “mighty” because she will also take your pink slip ❌
.
Here’s to the species of fish that can turn a slow day into a memory or two!

There’s something about those spots that do it for me. I don’t care how many trout I’ve caught over the years... every time a fish gets close to the net, I get lost in those spots. Some people think all fish look the same, but when you actually take the time to admire these beautiful fish, you see just how unique each one is, regardless of size.

And don’t get me started on those rosy cheeks! Or the olive green! Or the rainbow running down the side! Or those fins!

If there’s one thing that I know about the fly fishing world, it’s just how important the salmon are to the whole ecosystem of a watershed. For those of us who spend our days chasing fish, this is no more obvious than the trout fishery.
.
For example, I think the fishing on the Upper Kenai has radically changed over the years and it is a combination of fishing pressure and definitely the lack of king salmon. There just aren’t as many big ‘bows up there like back in the day and I think it likely has something to do with the kings.
.
So when I see big carcasses like this, I’m happy. This one was probably over 50 lbs.

If you’ve ever wondered if throwing streamers on the Lower Sacramento River is worth it, allow me to introduce you to Walter. Walter was a sculpin that I found while floating the river and has the typical dark olive green with little darker spots all over his body. His lighter underbelly seems to indicate that he liked to hang on the bottom of the river.
.
Yes, it’s true that our fish are pretty lazy and catching them on the swing or while stripping may not put twenty fish in your boat (or to shore), but there *are* sculpins and we all know there *are* big fish, and I can assure you that I’ve caught some of them on dark olive wooly buggers and other similar patterns.
.
Plus, it’s nice to change things up from time to time. That’s why, I think, ladies and men who fly fish a lot tend to have a variety of methods at their disposal. I mean, to dry fly, you have to perfect the reach cast. And who hasn’t fished with an indicator, two split shot, and three flies, only to discover that bobber casting is an art? And don’t get me started on spey casting and the allure of catching fresh steelhead on the swing! Oh, and I’m sure some hardcore euro-nympher will want a shoutout, so yes... tight line nymphing is very effective. There, I said it.
.
So don’t be afraid to throw on a streamer on the Sac. Fish the shallow riffles and you may discover a hungry ‘bow looking for some meat!

A couple years ago, my friend Brendon (@bentfin) and I hopped in his truck and pulled a drift boat to Montana. We ended up fishing the Madison (twice), the Gallatin, the Big Hole, and the Big Horn, using everything from big dry flies to a bunch of different nymphs and even some large crayfish and minnow imitations (got to love the big buck nasty browns).
.
Our first day, however, was on the upper section of the Madison. So after we stopped by Galloup’s Slide Inn to grab some local flies and see the man himself, we hit the river.
.
And it was twenty-seven degrees when we started fishing. That’s right... it was BELOW freezing. I left living in the Midwest because I can’t stand that stuff! It got above freezing that day, but barely.
.
Oh, did I mention that this trip was near the end of April? Yeah... a bit crazy, but when you have a chance to fish Montana, the calendars line up, and the rivers haven’t blown out due to the spring run off, you go.
.
This rainbow was the first fish I caught. It wasn’t huge, but it was respectable. But let me tell you, the pain of holding this fish in this temperature was nearly unbearable and I spent the rest of the day trying to keep my fingers from falling off and every fish I caught was a mixture of excitement and sorrow because I’d have to get my hands wet again!
.
But the trip was epic. Traveling and fishing with friends is always a blessing and catching fish in Montana is hard to complain about.

Yesterday was my 41st birthday, so to celebrate 36 years of fly fishing, I went on a short float all by my lonesome.

And it was totally worth it. In fact, one might say the fishing was as good as it could be, even in comparison to those “egg bite” days.

In short, I have one word for you: #caddis.

Growing up in Alaska, I can admit that I have live

Growing up in Alaska, I can admit that I have lived a very spoiled life. And though the Kenai trout fishing is not what it was in the 80’s and 90’s, there’s something still very romantic about this river.

The king salmon fishing isn’t what it used to be, but the reds — oh my! I think I’ve probably caught thousands of sockey salmon in my life and they never get boring and they always taste good too... by far my favorite salmon to eat!

This past September I was fortunate to fish the opening day after the river had been closed due to the #swanlakefire and it was 🔥. I don’t know how many trout or dollies we caught, but I’m sure it was well past a hundred plus. It was, as we used to say, a joke. It was legendary. It was hero season as #eggbite was in full swing and all of those salmon you see in this picture were surrounded by pods of fish looking to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner... plus all of the snacks they could get to.

I love living in California, but boy do I miss living full time in Alaska!

This one time, my friend Brendon (@bentfin) and I flew to Miami so that we could do a couple days on the Flats, check out the Keys, and fish the Everglades. And after our guide pushed us past a pod of fish, this lucky guy happened to spot that pod and then asked, “Hey, should I cast to those fish?” Yes. Yes you should.
.
So he cast and immediately hooked one of these “baby” tarpon that proceeded to do what only tarpon can do and he “bowed to the king” and managed to, after the fish wrapped itself around some mangroves, land this fish.
.
It was pretty epic. He flew in on a red eye. Spotted his own fish. And landed it.
.
Of course... someone had to take the photo, so I guess I had a reason to be there too. Plus I had to drive us to the airport in our rented Camero so we could make our red eye back to Cali. Two days of fishing in Miami and I guess we could have done worse.
