The Rubber Leg is back!

Floated the Sacramento River from Bonneyview down to Anderson yesterday. The flow was around 7,000 cfs, so lots of water to cover! The day couldn’t have been better as far as the weather goes — sunny and not to hot, not to cold!

The fishing was fair to good. I wouldn’t say it was fantastic, but it certainly wasn’t bad. We caught fish throughout the day as well as lost fish throughout the day, including a hog that I was convinced was a snag until it took off with a bunch of line. In one particular spot, we hooked about eight fish in around ten minutes, landing four good ones.

Well the summer flows are beginning to arrive… the Lower Sac went from being around 3,200 cfs to around 7,000 cfs. Fishing tends to be a little tougher when the water levels change, especially considering just how amazing it’s been the past couple of months! The hatches are still crazy! There were PMD’s and caddis going off in massive amounts today! Check out the caddis on April’s jacket:

Upper Sac in late April…

Upper Sac in late April…

Yesterday I took someone up to the Upper Sac in the hopes of doing some dry-fly-dropper fishing. The water was @ 750cfs, which is still fishable albeit a tad faster in some locations. We fished a couple of my favorite spots in the hopes of finding some salmon flies and some participating fish.

Sadly, we saw only one salmon fly all day and after giving it a go to raise some fish, switched to some “down deep” nymphing… way deep. The general rule of thumb on this river is if you aren’t losing flies, you aren’t deep enough.

Well the fishing has been absolutely incredible this past month. I’d venture to guess that the one major reason it’s been so great is… wait for it… bugs. It’s like the river has come back to life and there are insects everywhere! PMD’s! BWO’s! Caddis! Oh my!

Every. Single. Fish. Has. Been. Gorgeous.

Been tough to get time to write a fishing report, so mine as well do it the last day of the month! Busy month for me… turned 39 years young and spent a lot of time on the river! In addition to taking out a good amount of people, I got to fish with my usual trout bum, Brendon. I’m really happy with the iPhone X’s portrait mode. It’s a great way to blur the background of your pictures so no one knows where you are catching all of the fish 😉
