The Rubber Leg is back!

The Rubber Leg is back!

Floated the Sacramento River from Bonneyview down to Anderson yesterday. The flow was around 7,000 cfs, so lots of water to cover! The day couldn’t have been better as far as the weather goes — sunny and not to hot, not to cold!  The fishing was fair to good. I wouldn’t say it was fantastic, but it certainly wasn’t bad. We caught fish throughout the day as well as lost fish throughout the day, including a hog that I was convinced was a snag until it took off with a bunch of line. In one particular spot, we hooked about...

Lower Sac Water Levels on the Rise…

Well the summer flows are beginning to arrive… the Lower Sac went from being around 3,200 cfs to around 7,000 cfs. Fishing tends to be a little tougher when the water levels change, especially considering just how amazing it’s been the past couple of months! The hatches are still crazy! There were PMD’s and caddis going off in massive amounts today! Check out the caddis on April’s jacket: The fish, however, were not as cooperative. We hooked a few but that’s about it. Pretty disappointing, but that’s...

Upper Sac in late April…

Upper Sac in late April…

Yesterday I took someone up to the Upper Sac in the hopes of doing some dry-fly-dropper fishing. The water was @ 750cfs, which is still fishable albeit a tad faster in some locations. We fished a couple of my favorite spots in the hopes of finding some salmon flies and some participating fish.  Sadly, we saw only one salmon fly all day and after giving it a go to raise some fish, switched to some “down deep” nymphing… way deep. The general rule of thumb on this river is if you aren’t losing flies, you aren’t deep...

The Tale of Two Fly Shops: When a Fly Shop goes wrong

My fellow trout bum Brendon and I spent the last week fishing our way across Montana. While April isn’t the most ideal time to fish the Big Sky region, one has to take every opportunity that they can get! We drove from NorCal through Nevada and Idaho and ended up fishing the Madison River (upper and lower), the Big Hole, the Bighorn River, and the Gallatin River. Since we were fishing a lot of water new to us, we stopped at quite a few fly shops.  Having spent three decades as a trout bum, I’ve been in fly shops all over the...

March Trout Madness 2018

Well the fishing has been absolutely incredible this past month. I’d venture to guess that the one major reason it’s been so great is… wait for it… bugs. It’s like the river has come back to life and there are insects everywhere! PMD’s! BWO’s! Caddis! Oh my!  Every. Single. Fish. Has. Been. Gorgeous.  Seriously, we haven’t seen any ugly looking trout… no snakes… no small fish… just nice fat healthy ‘bows. Oh my! There’s few places in the world outside of Alaska,...

February 2018 Fishing Report

Been tough to get time to write a fishing report, so mine as well do it the last day of the month! Busy month for me… turned 39 years young and spent a lot of time on the river! In addition to taking out a good amount of people, I got to fish with my usual trout bum, Brendon. I’m really happy with the iPhone X’s portrait mode. It’s a great way to blur the background of your pictures so no one knows where you are catching all of the fish 😉  Seems like the Bird’s Nest has been the fly we have most consistently been...

January Fishing Report…

January on the Lower Sac has been pretty excellent, and I only imagine it will get better in the coming months. The flies of choice have ranged from the good old rubber legs to bird’s nests to micro may’s. The folks I’ve been taking out have been hooking fish and, when I get casts in, I’ve got some nice ‘bows too!  The crowds have been fairly low too, which has been nice. Generally seeing about six to eight boats total, which is a lot better than when you see forty, ha!  One of my favorite moments in the past...

Up, Down, & Up Again: The Lower Sac

So in the past month the Lower Sacramento River in Redding, CA has gone from 10,000 cfs to 30,000 cfs to 6,000 cfs to 5,000 cfs to 13,000 cfs! Up, down, and up again! The water levels have been up and down so much that the levels have literally changed in the matter of feet. Makes for some very interesting fishing. One day you are fishing leaders that mine as well be 15 feet long and then the next day you are fishing more normal lengths.   I would like to state, as a matter of fact, that fishing the Lower Sacramento River when it’s...

Wind & Sun in NorCal: The First Week of April, 2017

Fly fishing in Northern California is a seductive past time because you can have days of supernatural experience and then days of outright frustration. Of course, even on the most frustratingly unproductive days, fishing is better than not fishing. And the past 8 days didn’t disappoint! “I’d rather be fly fishing thinking about God than in church thinking about fly fishing.” Click To Tweet Monday, April 3, @ the Trinity River. This year I had a really good year on the upper Trinity River between Lewiston and Junction...
